Highlights from our January 14 2015 meeting

Here are some highlights from our last meeting which was held Wed. January 14, 2015

ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR ST. ANTHONY’S CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE will be held on Wednesday, February 11th starting with a catered dinner at 6 p.m. in our new hall at St. Anthony’s Parish. Please note: nominations for our executive will not be taken from the floor that night. Previously, all our members were contacted and asked to put forward names from our membership who they felt would be a good fit for our executive. Ann R, our Past president, and Nominations/elections chairperson, will contact those people who have been nominated. If a person agrees to let their name stand for election, their name will then be presented on the evening of the 11th for election.
We encourage you to come out for dinner and to vote for members of Your Executive! Our executive serve for a term of two years.

If you wish to join us that evening, please phone Edna at 306-825-2699 to have your name added to the dinner list. Dinner is $20, which will be collected that evening!

Our treasurer’s books have been reviewed for 2014. Thanks to Leone D for serving as our treasurer these past years!

At the December 6th, Advent social and Pin presentation, several ladies received a pin:
10 year memberships: Pat H and Madeleine R
25 years: Helen L
40 years: Kathy N
60 years: Blanche M and Helen W

Funny thing about membership years, sometimes the information is not recorded properly. Our apologies to everyone this has affected.
A case in point: One of our members had her years recorded as 49 years a member in 2010 and then 51 years in 2011. She missed her 50 year anniversary. (We hope to remedy this at our February meeting when she will receive her 50 year pin.)
About 25 years ago, national office recorded memberships using an “April to March membership year”. Eventually , the CWL membership year followed the calendar year – January to December. You’d think it wouldn’t confuse matters, but it did.

We currently have 112 members in our council – 15 NEW!!!, 9 who renewed after a year or more lapsed.

Edmonton Diocesan CWL runs a poster/essay contest every year for the children in our schools. The students in our Catholic schools and Sunday Catechism class, will have the opportunity, to once again, take part. Our local schools will soon be contacted with all the information.

We recently purchased additional Baptismal and First Communion gifts which are given to the children in our parish.

Once again, we are able to offer funeral luncheons in our new hall for families who are experiencing funerals for loved ones. Thank you to Celestine, Myrna and their teams for being available on short notice to provide this service to our parishioners and community. In 2014, we provided lunch for two funerals and one evening prayer service. It is nice to have a larger space to use for our parish community!

Watch for information on these events:

  • World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 6th hosted by Knox Presbyterian church
  • CWL Zone 4 meeting – tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 21st from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in St. Anthony’s hall (note the day!!)
  • Regular March meeting for St. Anthony’s CWL on Wednesday, March 4th (at 7 p.m.) – note the date change, as the parish is having a mission from March 9 to 11th.

That’s all for now!
We hope to see as many of you as possible at the February 11th dinner meeting!
God bless,

November/December 2014 News

As I write this, we are entering the third week of Advent!
Prepare ye the way of the Lord!

We had a good November meeting held in the new meeting room off the narthex on the 12th. Joan B gave her testimony on how the Holy Spirit influenced her life. We thank Joan for sharing her story!

Here are some highlights of recent events:

  • Thank you to Marlene R who represented St. Anthony’s CWL at the Remembrance Day service held November 11th at the Lloydminster Comp school gym.
  • Lois H-T’s husband, Knute, received a special honour at the Remembrance Day ceremony. He was given an award equivalent to the Order of Canada for his participation in the second world war. Congratulations!
  • November 22nd Fall Fundraiser – With the lunch counter, raffle table, and bake table, we raised about $1100.00! Thanks to all who volunteered their time and talents that day!
  • CWL members helped with coffee after the November 15th mass and provided goodies after the November 23rd 9 a.m. mass – both masses were for loved ones who passed away this year.
  • The December 6th Pin Presentation and Advent Social was held in the New parish hall – pins were presented to several ladies celebrating notable years of membership! Congratulations, ladies!
  • A copy of St. Anthony’s Catholic Women’s League Policy Statement is reviewed every two years by the current president. Please see the attached Policy Statement for 2014.

Our executive members have been busy preparing their annual reports for 2014. We thank all these ladies who donated their time to be leaders in our CWL council.

A new executive team will be nominated and elected by our membership on February 11th, 2015. Nomination forms were provided to all CWL members. Please complete them to the best of your ability, and return to our Nomination chair/Past President, Ann R, by January 14, 2015. Ann and her nomination team will contact all ladies who were nominated and, after prayerful consideration, many will let their names stand for election. (The current president automatically assumes the past president position, and the president-elect automatically assumes the President’s position).

Our next meetings: January 14, 2015 at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony’s
February 11, 2015 at St. Anthony’s parish – ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Election of a New Executive and dinner meeting

Our 90th Anniversary cake

CWL October meeting highlights

As always, we begin our meeting with prayerful intentions for family and loved ones. Please keep in mind all your friends and family who are in need of your prayers.

Theresa B. spoke during our Spiritual Reflection on how the Holy Spirit filled her life. She spoke on how the Charismatic Renewal influenced and infused her life.

We hope to host a Life In the Spirit Seminar in our parish next year sometime. Keep posted!

Our 90th council Anniversary and the Parish’s 100th anniversary was well received on September 21st.
We anxiously await when our new kitchen and hall is 100% completed and ready for occupancy!

Our council received a certificate from Alberta Provincial CWL council for increasing our membership in 2013. There is a challenge from Edmonton Diocesan council that each member should try to recruit one new member.
Currently, Edmonton Diocesan CWL has 4410 members in 67 CWL councils.

Ann R. and I attended the Fall Diocesan Meeting in Rocky Mountain House on Saturday, September 28th. We drove in the day before (Friday), watched a horrible Edmonton Eskimo/Saskatchewan Roughrider game that night, and attended the meeting at St. Matthew’s parish the next day.
About 104 members were present for the day. At each of the three Diocesan meetings held annually (Fall meeting, Mid-winter meeting and April Annual convention), we have mass and the mass disbursements are collected for a worthy cause on which the members vote. This fall, we collected funds for St. Matthew elementary school (in Rocky Mountain House) breakfast program. The ladies very generously donated over $840.00 for this program.

Dorothy J., who serves on the Provincial CWL council, was our guest speaker for the afternoon. She spoke on Servant Leadership and What Floats your boat?
In a very engaging and humourous way, Dorothy challenged us to to be the best CWL member we can be – learn to delegate, be accountable, be credible, have humour, humility and be human, have an enthusiasm for Jesus! create and provide Dignity kits for young women in various African countries. The dignity kits are feminine Hygiene products which are re-usable and last up to 3 years. Each kit is $10. They allow a young woman to continue going to school and graduate, without missing classes. Check out the website for more information.

Development and Peace meeting at St. Anthony’s next Wed. October 15th, starting at 7 p.m. This fall’s campaign is called, “Sow Much Love” – Small family farmers feed the world.

Membership Drive: the weekends of October 25/26 and November 1/2 after the 4 Sunday masses. Membership is still $25 for 2015.
Life Chain on Sunday, October 5th went well. There was a respectable turnout and the weather cooperated!

Bingo is at Dr. Cooke every first Wednesday of the month from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Our members help residents play the game and provide the prizes (fruit and other goodies)!

Our Fall newsletter will be out soon!

Elections for a new executive will be held in February 2015. The nomination forms will be going out soon. Please prayerfully consider letting your name stand for a position on the Executive. It is a two year commitment – but one of our executive commented that the time went very quickly!

Fall Fundraiser: We are looking at a couple of dates in November. We’ll keep you posted!

The next Festival of Praise is October 18th at St. Anthony’s!

Our annual Advent Social and Pin Presentation is tentatively slated for Saturday, December 6th from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Narthex.

Nickels for the North and Dimes for Catholic Missions in Canada– save your nickels to help our northern CWL members attend functions in their dioceses; save your dimes to help our missionaries in Canada’s north – both groups have huge territories to navigate.

Adopt a Seminarian program: This program is organized through the Edmonton Diocesan CWL Christian Family Life committee. There are many men studying for the priesthood and many of them need our prayers and support during their years in the seminary. Once again, we have “adopted” Ross Campbell, a young man from the Hamilton Diocese. You may send him prayers and letters of encouragement through rosss_25. Please identify yourself as a member of St. Anthony’s CWL council when you write him!

Western Canadian Catholic Youth Conference: October 2-4, 2015 in Red Deer. This will be the first of its kind and is open to students in grade 9-12. They have invited students from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. Please pray for their success. They hope to run this event every second year. Contact Jeannette at wccyc2015 for more information.

Face to Face United Conference in Saskatoon on November 22 and 23rd, 2014. This is open to all ages.

We are encouraged to continue letter writing to the various levels of government.
At the Alberta-Mackenzie Provincial CWL convention in June, members passed the resolution “Flavoured Tobacco Products”. This was passed at the national level at the annual general meeting in August – Resolution 2014.03 Flavoured Tobacco Products Ban. Alberta Bill 206 amended the Tobacco Reduction act by adding the following 7:4 “No person shall sell or offer to sell a tobacco product that contains a flavouring agent prohibited by the regulations” (Find details by googling Alberta Bill 206).

Please write or phone your AB MLA (Richard Starke) and ask for this bill to be proclaimed when the legislature convenes.

For other resolutions of interest, check out the national CWL website at and look for the Resolutions link.

God bless,
I think that’s enough for now!

Edna, your CWL president at St. Anthony’s (for another few months)!!

Highlights of the September 10 2014 CWL meeting

Here are the highlights of St. Anthony CWL meeting from September 10th:

Great potluck! Thanks to all who contributed.
23 ladies were present for the dinner and meeting.
For our Spiritual Development, Marlene R. gave a stirring talk on the importance of young people to develop a personal relationship with the Lord. Marlene plans to have someone speak, at the next two meetings, on how the Holy Spirit has moved in their lives. Hopefully, we can host a Life in the Spirit seminar in the near future. We concluded with a rosary for our priests.

Minutes from the last meeting: Our June meeting was a visit to St. Joseph Mission House in Marshall. We brought our picnic lunches, shared with one another, and had a good tour from Mother Cynthia and a reflection on “We have Seen the Lord”.

Up-coming Parish 100th celebration and our CWL council’s 90th anniversary on Sunday, September 21st starting with 11 a.m. mass, followed by a social in our new hall. We hope everyone will plan to come out for this!

From the spring bake sale, we cleared almost $600.00 and the Garage sale made just over $1100.00. Thanks again to everyone who helped with these fundraisers.

We provided a CWL honour guard at Elizabeth K’s funeral on August 15th. We also collected funds to present to the family to help with meal planning. We purchased gift certificates from Humpty’s Restaurant, Boston Pizza, Mr. Bill’s and Spiro’s. Thanks to all who helped in these ventures.

We currently have 109 paid members for 2014. 5 did not renew and 1 moved.

We learned about Our Lady, the Un-Doer of Knots (see the article in September’s Word Among Us)!

Life Chain is coming up the first Sunday in October. Watch the church bulletin for more information.

Development and Peace is working on a project to support small family farms.

There will be a special collection to help with the crisis in the Middle East, as requested by our Archbishop.

Support “Nickels for the North” to help our northern CWL members attend CWL functions (some northern dioceses have very few members and it is far to travel to CWL events anywhere) ; and also dimes for “Catholic Mission in Canada”(Again, travel for our priests, religious and missionaries in the northern dioceses is costly and time-consuming) Barb B. will collect your nickels and dimes to help these two causes.

Our next newsletter will be out in October.

Our funeral luncheon committee continues to “wait and see” until the kitchen is ready to resume funeral luncheons, once again, in our parish.

Ann R, as past president, has been working hard on up-dating our council’s history. See her results at the September 21st 90th celebration!

Elections for a new Executive will occur at the February 2015 meeting. We ask all our members to prayerfully consider letting your name stand for a position on the executive. It is a two year commitment – one that will hopefully be beneficial to you!

The Fall Diocesan meeting is coming up on September 27th in Rocky Mountain House.

IMPORTANT: St. Anthony’s Parish needs a CWL member to sit on a Refugee Committee. The parish hopes to sponsor a family, bring them to Lloydminster and help them get established in a home, school and our community. You would help this family with shopping, doctor’s appointments, etc. If you are interested and have the time to commit, please let me know….Edna….306-825-2699. This would be a time commitment of about one year.

Hospitality before mass – we do not have a schedule yet for greeting before mass. If you have the time, and see that a greeter is needed, please just do it! A warm smile and a handshake before mass may make someone’s day!

Watch the church bulletin for our Fall Supper details.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 8th at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Parish.
